Who Is Miles Scientific?

Miles Scientific Corporation (MSC)

Miles Scientific Corporation (MSC), previously known as Analtech, was the first company in the world to commercially manufacture thin layer chromatography (TLC) plates. We’ve now been manufacturing and reselling chromatography products—as well as providing personal technical support—to the scientific community for nearly 60 years.

Matt Lamkin

Matt Lamkin tarted the company in 1961 as Custom Service Chemicals. Running his business in the evenings while working full-time at DuPont, Matt started making TLC plates and repackaging drums of solvents into gallon jars. He later renamed the company Analtech.

The business grew

Matt left his day job, and the company has been on an upward trajectory ever since. In the late 1960s, Matt took on a new investing partner, Ken Rainin of Oakland, California. This new funding led to the construction of our current manufacturing facility in Newark, Delaware.

Matt retired in 2011

Sadly, Ken Rainin passed away in 2009 and Matt only a little more than a year after retirement. Steven Miles, a 27-year veteran employee, stepped forward in 2015 and purchased the company. This was a perfect solution for the Lamkin and Rainin families as they sought a business transition that would keep Analtech where it was and protect the jobs of its many loyal employees. This staff had become a family and with Steven Miles as the new owner, the family would remain intact.

Steven had worked his way from a lab technician to Sales & Marketing Manager and eventually General Manager of Analtech. Due to the structure of the purchase agreement the name of the company, Analtech, couldn’t continue to be used. And thus, Miles Scientific was introduced as the new name of this long-time manufacturer of TLC plates and equipment.

The reboot in 2015

Since the reboot in 2015, we’ve made creative additions to our product line while practicing lean manufacturing. This helps us control costs and bring greater value to our customers.
